Taking Berlin to Court
Nicaragua’s case may or may not prevail. We already know it was brilliantly argued and it will put Germany to shame forever.
For roughly half a year now, Germany’s government has chosen to make Germany complicit in Israel’s Gaza Genocide, the clearly deliberate mass murder of Palestinians by, in essence, bombs, bullets, and starvation. Berlin has not only offered Tel Aviv robust diplomatic support, but massively surged its arms exports to Israel and is helping starve its victims by still withholding support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), first entirely and now – with supreme cynicism – specifically for Gaza.
The German authorities – including in “civil” society, such as universities – and media have also unleashed a wave of authoritarian, McCarthy-style oppression and retaliation against any critics of this abject course. These facts are now common knowledge. Much of the world is puzzled and appalled by Germany’s arrogant failure to comply with elementary international law and decency. Berlin has brought shame and isolation on Germany, again. Against this backdrop, Nicaragua has acted and taken Berlin to the International Court of Justice.
